Volvo XC90, #1 Winter Warrior, Volvo XC60 #2

Brace yourself– this week’s temperature drop was just a snippet of what this winter has got in store for us. With temperatures that low, snow blanketed streets are inevitable, so if there’s anything that belongs under the tree next week, it’s the keys to Forbes #1 winter warrior- the Volvo XC90.

While opting for the comfort of blanket forts and hot cocoa is the safest bet, if you have to maneuver the snow covered streets of Northern Virginia, Maryland, and DC you’ll feel more secure behind the wheel of the XC90.

With all-wheel-drive options, and a 9.4 inch ground clearance, getting stuck in the snow will only be an excuse to make up for that last minute breakfast run before work. Created with boron steel, run off road mitigation, and the look and feel of sophisticated luxury, the XC90 is the finest and safest way to travel this winter.

Following suit, Volvo’s XC60 is #2 on Forbes Winter Warriors– it’s clear that if you want to tread safely this winter, you can’t go wrong in a Volvo.

It’s Electrifying!

Volvo is always striving to be at the forefront. While they are already known for their giant leaps in safety, they’re looking to be leaders in quite a few different aspects. 2025’s focus? Electrified vehicles– one-million of them.

In its 2015 Sustainability Report, Volvo has outlined its goals to have one-million electrified cars by 2025 (alongside its goal to: impose climate neutral operations by 2025, move forward to zero deaths and serious injury in a Volvo by 2020, have 35% of its leading positions held by women by 2020, and to work with international partners to advocate sustainability). Among the one-million electrified cars, they are pledging to have a fully electric vehicle by 2019 (not too long from now).

In efforts to fulfill the one-million electrified vehicles, Volvo is looking to offer two hybrid versions of each model, and has been working on the readying process for the past five years with two newly developed vehicle architectures (Scalable Product Architecture and Compact Modular Architecture) that can integrate hybrid or electric car technology.

“The new commitment has been christened ‘omtanke’, which is a Swedish word that means ‘consideration’ or ‘caring’.”

Volvo’s commitment to sustainability reaches beyond the wheel, and into our everyday lives– they are working to reduce the negative impact of the business to bring positive change from improved environmental impact and social growth as a company, and within society.

Volvo currently offers the XC90 T8, which is the plug-in hybrid version of the award-winning luxurious 2016 XC90.

Hybrid Showdown: Volvo vs. BMW

Put head to head, Volvo outranked the BMW over and over…and over again. Sorry BMW, drivers don’t have the time for “inconsistent” and “strained.” In a slowly growing niche of vehicles, the Hybrid SUV, the XC90 T8 is proving to be the best of the best.

The look and feel of the XC90 T8 alone leaves the BMW X6 40e in the shadows. But what happens when you put them to the test? The XC90 stands its ground.

Pushing 300 bhp, (over the BMW’s 242bhp) we question its ability to stand up to its real hybrid appeal. The XC90 is the economical choice for you wallet, time, and mother nature.

As a DMV commuter, traffic has become a part of and sometimes dictates, our everyday lives. Crucial in our commuter-centric world, the XC90 bested the BMW’s 34.9mpg by almost 10 miles per gallon. And even after the battery has taken a toll, and is well depleted the Volvo still goes farther (with a more responsive powerful feel) than its German counterpart. Not to mention, after the battery, the Volvo is running in the 30’s while BMW is falls just below. (You see the pattern here?)

“The XC90 is, quite plainly, the more appealing product.”

What about space? Volvo has managed to finesse the on board drive battery in a way that allows to keep its seven passenger space, while the BMW only has room for five.

And If none of that was at all convincing, consider this– with the XC90 in your driveway you can sleep soundly knowing that its CO2 emissions falls significantly below the BMW’s 78g/km of CO2.

Here’s how the two stack up:

Volvo—Always Ahead of the Pack

Volvo nabs the title once more.
The season opening of the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) Race of France starts with Volvo rolling out the safest of the safe. Volvo’s very own V60 Polestar has been named the World’s Safest WTCC Safety Car (Safe-ity safe, safe).

The WTCC had welcomed Volvo Polestar as a manufacturer back in October 2015,  but the welcome is now an official partnership as the WTCC Official Safety Car.
What’s so special?
Equipped with a roll cage, rescue  and communication technology, and additional safety equipment, the V60 Polestar safety car will be manned by a driver and observer as the WTCC Safety Car, setting the pace on the racetrack during cautionary periods (racetrack obstructions, poor weather conditions, etc…). Volvo fans and motorsport viewers alike, can now watch the award winning Polestar in action in races all over.

The Volvo Polestar models give you the power, speed, and precision behind the wheel, without sacrificing the safety and peace of mind when driving a Volvo (alone or with the whole family strapped in).

Don Beyer Volvo Falls Church is your exclusive Polestar dealer in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area. See our Polestar inventory here.

What do Swedes and North Koreans have in common?

They both drive Volvos!

It turns out the late, great Kim Jong-il made a deal with Sweden back in the 1970s where North Korea would order (and presumably pay for) 1,000 Volvo 144 sedans.

Fast forward  to 2016  and the enigma that is North Korea still has yet to pay the €300,000,000 bill. Every six months, Sweden politely sends a late payment notice and Kim Jong-Un makes his servants eat the notice while riding nude on a unicycle (lest they face an anti tank launcher).

Sweden makes great cars and trucks, but they seem to be lacking in the repo man department.

Is it a surprise these old Volvos are still in service? Not really. Volvo has always been known for both safety and longevity.

Do you have an old Volvo? For the entire month of February, bring in your old Volvo for service and we’ll give you a great deal:

If your Volvo is 10 years or older we will give you 15% off labor. (2006 and prior)
If your Volvo is 7 years old we will give you 10% off labor. (Model Year 2007-2009)
If your Volvo is 5 years old we will give you 7.5% off labor. (Model Year 2010-2011)

Motor Trend’s SUV of the Year for the 2nd Time – the New 2016 Volvo XC90!

151111_All_new_XC90_World_Premiere

Update: The Volvo XC90 was just awarded “2016 Yahoo Autos Ride Of The Year”

Back in 2002 we were all excited for Volvo’s first SUV, the XC90. Motor Trend named the Volvo XC90 SUV of the year. The XC90 turned out to be a game changer in the world of SUVs and left other luxury brands, such as Lexus and Acura, scrambling to catch up.

Here we are again, 13 years later. There is an all new XC90, and it’s turning the world on its ear. The 2016 Volvo XC90 has been named Motor Trend’s SUV of the Year for 2015. It topped its competitors in design advancement, engineering excellence, efficiency, safety, and value.

““Everyone at Volvo Cars is exceptionally proud to win the Motor Trend SUV of the Year award,” said Lex Kerssemakers, president and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America. “The all-new XC90 is a strong indicator of things to come at Volvo.”

It’s a Miracle! Volvo Building Factory in South Carolina

VOLVO BREAKS GROUND IN SOUTH CAROLINA—

While the Pope was busy blessing New Yorker’s last Friday, the United States and Don Beyer Volvo were blessed with the groundbreaking of Volvo’s new factory in Ridgeville, South Carolina, located about 30 miles from Charleston.

It was nearly 40 years ago when Volvo first pondered the idea of a U.S. factory. At the time, it was slated to be built in Chesapeake, VA (much closer to Northern Virginia and Don Beyer Volvo).  Due to a myriad of factors Volvo decided to build a truck plant in South Carolina instead. Now, after all these years, we will see a U.S. built Volvo S60 roll off the assembly line in 2018.

“I cannot think of a more interesting time in Volvo’s history. We made it happen in Europe, we made it happen in Asia and we’re going to make it happen here.” -Katarina Fjording

The new factory will provide much needed  jobs in South Carolina where the unemployment rate is one of the worst in the country. It also will give us quicker access to Volvo’s groundbreaking new products that are proving to be not only the safest cars ever built, but some of the most fuel efficient and climate friendly cars, too!

2016 XC90 Worthy of Thor’s Hammer — We Think So Too

All_New_XC90_Exterior_3As if there isn’t enough to love about Volvo’s XC90—fully equipped with its top of the line safety and convenience features, the XC90 exists as the real world embodiment of Volvo’s commitment to safety. So much so that Volvo has even gone as far as to vow zero deaths (and other serious injuries) by the year 2020—only five years from now.

Dan Neil highlighted the luxury SUV in his “Volvo XC90 T6 Inscription: A Luxury SUV Worthy of Thor’s Hammer,” published in The Wall Street Journal, detailing its automatic braking, safety and comfort conscious seat design, and ample space. Put up against the XC90, BMW X5’s 66 cubic feet of cargo space fizzles under the XC90’s 85 and the minimal space others provide don’t even seem worth mentioning (move over Range Rover, Jeep, and Mercedes).

Even the most critical car snobs fanned over the brilliance of this automotive dream, and thousands have taken their word for it. Folks are lining up around the corner to get behind the wheel—over 57,000 orders and counting across the globe. With a Don Beyer Volvo in Alexandria, Dulles, Falls Church, and Winchester getting an XC90 has never been easier.

Check out what else Neil has to say about the luxury SUV here.
