Volvo Cars redefines luxury yet again as it designs the ultimate family car, designed around the best example of human innovation there is, a child.

56 years ago, Volvo Car’s,  Nils Bohlin introduced the three-point safety belt, literally changing the world and driving safety standards for drivers of every make and model on the road. Will Volvo change the rules of the road for parents worldwide next?

“We started by asking ourselves if we could make life easier for parents and safer for their children when it comes to the child seat experience,”- Tisha Johnson, Chief Designer of Interiors at Volvo Cars Concept and Monitoring Centre.

“Firework of ideas and new possibilities”

Don Beyer Volvo couldn’t agree more with Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President of Design Volvo Car Group. The possibilities are endless in having the ability to customize the vital space available next to the driver. Volvo’s XC90 Excellence Lounge Console which debuted this Spring at the Shanghai Auto Show replaces the front passenger seat, presenting endlessly innovative methods of utilizing the newly restored space.

The theory behind the lounge console concept is to provide room for consumers to customize their vehicle to embody their lifestyle by providing extended aspects of storage and comfort in the security of your most frequently used items. The Lounge Console concept derives from ethnographic research conducted by Volvo Cars in an effort to truly relate and respond to the unmet and unexpressed needs of consumers with high-profile lifestyles. Since 1927, the Swedish manufacturer’s heritage has revolved around three core values of safety, quality and environment. The manufacturers dedication to progression of driving experience continues on at an accelerated pace.

“To be the world’s most progressive and desired premium car brand. And we believe our global success will be driven by making life less complicated for people, while strengthening our commitment to safety, quality and the environment.”

A Press Release from Volvo Cars Global Newsroom released earlier this month, confirms our suspicions that Volvo is taking human innovation to an entirely level.

Following the Shanghai Auto Show, Volvo Cars owner, Li Shufu reviewed the XC90 Excellence Lounge Console and enlisted the Volvo design team to determine the best use of space for such a location for consumers.

How would the Jetson family store their precious cargo?

Volvo’s Excellence Child Seat Concept.

Volvo’s research pays off for parents. As Volvo Cars stated, due to the lack of muscular strength in the necks of small children and the disproportionate head size in relation to their bodies, vehicle seating for small children calls for special structure and requires children to be rearward facing for as long as possible up to the age of 3 or 4. The Excellence Child Safety Seat ConceptThis concept will result in a parent or caregiver being able to maintain eye contact with their child from the rear seat and having the ability to even keep a bottle warm during transportation in Volvo’s warming cup holders. Volvo further acknowledges the day’s in’s and out’s for parents traveling and how a vehicle concept of this nature can instantly provide you with something you cannot purchase, more time. Time to actually spend and focus on your child, literally all from the seat of your Volvo.  Volvo’s dedicated attention to detail is illuminated through the Excellence Child Seat Concept, agreeing with parents around the world that more often than not, your precious cargo comes with baggage of their own.

Essentials for most small children often greatly exceed the amount of personal items needed by a parent themselves. Volvo is one step ahead of parents with their concept, providing parents with further space optimization in addition to the child swivel seat with space for your child’s “accessories”. Having storage in a vehicle designed for parents to customize towards their lifestyles leads Volvo to creating extra nooks and crannies for that extra baggage of diapers, blankets, and even leaving enough room for a tote (or diaper) bag under the dashboard. Tisha Johnson, Chief Designer Interiors for Volvo Cars Concept and Monitoring Centre elaborated further on the Volvo’s design direction saying,

“We have been investigating the nature of progressive luxury for some time and we see a direct connection between luxury and emotional wellbeing. So we have taken the next step in redefining how the interior of a car can be used to suit our customers’ needs. We have always placed a great deal of importance on child safety, but this takes things to the next level,” concluded Tisha Johnson.

Parents around the world rejoice, Volvo is listening and responding with the next level of vehicle luxuries.

We think the Jetson family, his boy Elroy, daughter Judy and Jane, his wife, would purchase a Volvo.
